If you still have an old analogue TV, now is the time to upgrade to a new digital set, or continue to use your old television by connecting a Freeview (which you receive via your existing aerial) or Satellite adaptor. You can buy Freeview receivers for less than £20 so there’s no excuse not to convert all your televisions.
Most people will be able to receive Freeview via their existing aerial, but in some cases a new aerial will be required. If you’re not sure if you’ll need a new aerial to receive Freeview, it could be cheaper to buy a Freeview box to test your reception than to call out an expensive aerial installer who may well try to sell you something you don’t need. If you have a weak signal an aerial amplifier could boost the signal sufficiently to avoid buying a new aerial.
For a wider range of channels you could consider getting a satellite receiver instead. Freesat is a new satellite service that has no subscription charges, you just pay for the equipment. Sky offer a similar service, in addition to their paid subscription channels.
The basic free to view channels available by satellite and Freeview include BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, Channel 4, E4, More4, Five, Fiver, Five US, Sky 3, CBBC, CITV, CBeebies, plus various news, music and shopping channels. In addition to this you get dozens of radio stations.
Some channels are available for free on Freeview that you have to pay for on satellite – Dave, Virgin and Sky Sports News.
Satellite has more free channels that are not available on Freeview, including more news channels, music channels, religious channels and many more shopping channels.
